Cool People

My new theory is that Cool People are as much a subset of the human race, like white people and Asians. As I now share an office with a Cool Person and have spent a fair chunk of life observing them from afar, at church (you laugh now, but trust me) and school, I believe I am certified to give you a run down of the Cool People.

Cool People don't even have to say 'Hi I'm Cool.' They can just walk into a room and people KNOW. It is even more obvious than a mullet or wearing a stupid shirt. Cool just radiates from them.

Cool People speak Coolspeak. Every thing they say, no matter how nice or snobbish or stupid or smart or ridiculous it sounds, is cool. It is the most obvious discourse there is. You probably won't understand some of the things they say if you are a lesser mortal like myself. Coolspeak is beyond the best of us.

Cool People have a Cool Vibe. Similar to having cool radiate from them, one can almost sense a cool person coming four or five seconds before they see them. The Vibe is that strong. so strong it even needs capitalization.

Cool People will make you nervous and flustered for no reason other than you are in awe of being in company with a cool person. It is slowly starting to wear off me, but as I've had a break from Mr. Cool for today, tomorrow in the office will be major nervous-flustered time.

Cool People are just generally fabulous, and even if they're not fabulous, they make you think they're fabulous. Or you think 'they're not fabulous at all' but you pretend to think their fabulous otherwise you won't have any friends.

Cool People mean you can be mean behind their backs, but still secretly wish you were like them.

The end.

Being Generous

Oftentimes I find my mind comes up with things that befuddle even myself. Which is stupid because I control my mind and therefore should intimately understand it. One of these befuddling thoughts has been on my mind for some time. And it is Feeling Generous about things that actually don't count as generous.

My example for you is car parks.

When I worked a lot at Garden City and drove (because I rarely drive as I'm lazy and my parents love me and pay for a car therefore I don't have a car therefore I don't drive one often), on Saturdays I would (so rebelliously) park in the spots right near the Post Office so I had quick, easy and direct access straight out to the car with no dilly dallying, as the only shops there are for phones and I hate phones and how they always break.

Anyway, I realized something - every time I left at one thirty after my morning shift, and would walk out and see a bazillion cars circling the carpark a thousand times for four hours trying to find a spot on a Saturday afternoon (fools, who even shops then), I had this fabulous feeling like I was Doing Right by this person - sacrificing my parking spot for the betterment of their shopping afternoon for groceries and toilet paper. And maybe gourmet, overpriced yoghurt.

BUT I WASN'T! My mind was tricking me! I was not Being Generous at all. I was just leaving and that event happened to coincide with someone else coming. But it made me feel like a Better Person, and that is all that matters.

Observations About Wellard:

* If you phone people about money, they automatically don't like you
* Having a trestle table as a desk counts you as a nobody. But a cool nobody
* Sharing an office with a cooley is very stressful but also very entertaining
* Sharing an office with a cooley who makes other people act like cooleys is very entertaining. And makes me wonder what I'd have to do to qualify for cooley status. Too much I think
* Stationery passes the time
* If you have a computer in front of you, it looks like you're working
* Quality free coffee is the best
* Food shopping in Fremantle is oftentimes hazardous
* My filing skills have been honed, almost to perfection
* Having your uncle as your head honcho boss can be lame
* Offices are stuffy places
* They also like to hang up blinds on windows that are inside and face a wall. It contributes to stuffiness
* It is nice getting paid to bludge around. Boring. But nice.

Back again!

Well, I survived another family holiday away. I read three books, watched a lot of episodes of Dawson's Creek, the entire season of Summer Heights High, ate a lot of expensive food, bought my favourite white chocolate liqueur, and dominated a few family games of Smart Ass. Google it, it's really a game.

I've been preparing for the big party on Friday night - although since it's a surprise I can't tell you who it's for. I've been scanning photos, planning ideas, deciding what to wear, and so on and so forth. I love parties so so much.

I feel very organized for the year ahead - if all goes to plan, I'll be earning the money I'd decided on, have lots of free time to study and be merry, and generally improve life's ridiculous hectic pace. So hopefully this year will be a bit more relaxing. I am feeling quite melancholy as I'm giving up leading at Soul to Sole this year. Timewise it just kills me, but I was really growing to love the girls and challenging them with dance. And choreographing exciting dances. Ohw ell, if it's meant to be, God will shift my stupid Politics lecture. Fingers crossed!

I'm just rambling, as I have a lot to do and procrastinating isn't limited to study/work times. Strange hey.

I miss everyone for some reason. ILOVE YOU ALL COME BACK xx x x x x

Goodbye Friends!

Loved ones, I am off to Busselton (again - this time with the fam) until Sunday, and will miss your contact.

I have something exciting to share though - I bought a new notebook yesterday, because my 'know your rights' smiggle fabulous one is reaching a close. It is just lovely, and covered with coffee cups. The inside cover has my new favourite quote, that I think many of you will identify with:

'A cup of coffee commits one to forty years of friendship' - Turkish Proverb.

Well, I have no issues with that! Love x x x

Client v Customer

As I am at work, I was pondering the difference between a client and a customer. I've had many jobs, but this is the first one I've referred to our outside sources as 'client's - I am much more accustomed to customers. But I am learning slowly. In any case, here are some of the differences I thought of:

A client sounds posh.
A customer sounds working-class.

A client is probably really rich or wears a tie a lot.
A customer is more likely to be a young/middle-aged, stay-at-home mum with a trolley full of shopping.

A client is corporate-y.
A customer is shopping centre-y.

A client has a receptionist or personal secretary, and gets their suits dry-cleaned.
A customer wears casual clothes and answers their own phone.

A client is only a client from nine till five.
A customer is always a customer.

A client probably has three of their own personal lawyers.
A customer probably has a friend of a friend who is a lawyer.

A client spends millions of dollars.
A customer spends $4.10 on a Maxi Moo and tries to barter the price.

A client walks around with a business card.
A customer doesn't.

A client gives you a handshake.
A customer calls at you from the counter.

A client makes you look after their parking.
A customer looks after their own parking.

A client is pretentious.
A customer is practical.

I do know some of these are inaccurate/stereotypical/really really superbly lame, but on the whole I think they capture the difference. I'm going to soon go and be a customer at Culleys.

EUPHEMISMS

I love love love euphemisms. I love all the different ways they manifest themselves. I love how you can euphemize everything. I love clever euphemisms. I like lame euphemisms. I even like cliche euphemisms.

I decided today that I am a euphemism for a lot of things. Some of them made me sad, and some of them made me happy. But the word euphemism is just so awesome that I got over it!

On My Way

I really liked this PostSecret. It has a lot of hope in it. I often try to work out where I am in being 'on my way'. At the beginning of my way? The end? Somewhere in the middle?

I guess it doesn't really matter, as long as you're moving forward. it always makes me sad to see people who are stagnant in their lives and in their attitudes. You'd just have no hope or inspiration to keep trying and improving.

I'm excited for the future, as always. There are a few things that always weigh on my mind, but I'm trying to find inspiration and hope to keep moving on and growing and not getting caught in the pathetic and moving onto the exciting!

Anyway, enough about all that. I'm going to Busselton AGAIN on Tuesday so I have to write another packing list and make sure I get a million books to take away so I don't go absolutely INSANE.

People Watching, Parties and Shoes

Tonight I went to an eighteenth of a person I barely know by association from about three years ago. It was strange receiving the Facebook invitation, but as it was the first weekend of my entire life where I seriously had absolutely nothing at all in the world to do, I thought, well why not? I had two good friends from high school going, I could wear my pretty white dress again, and if it was crap i could bail early.

As it was incredibly awkward, seeing as everyone except for the three of us knew it each other, I amused myself in people watching. The party was black and white themed, which brought out the inner skanky-whore in most girls, although what doesn't these days? In any case, I saw many repetitions of the same vibe of dress. I enjoyed watching the skanky dancing as the girls danced, quickly looked to see if any guys were watching, then kept moving (out of time, may I add!!! And also moving, not dancing.) But my personal favourite was the jumpsuit.

Now, while most girls know that you can go short, tight and low-cut, there are limits. If it's strapless and backless, Hollywood tape is your friend. Your very very very best friend. If you are going to wear a black jumpsuit, that is backless, odd-fitting, has a massive frill at the front, and is cut too far around to not help you from preventing showing your boobs to the whole world, your mum/best friend needs to have a serious chat to you. You will not look good. It is not possible. If you want to look good, put a paper bag on your head. Or don't dance, and expose even more of those parts that do not need exposing.

But I will throw this in for all those guys that seem to think that shoes do not make an outfit - you are fools. If someone wears a beautiful dress and a pair of thongs, they may as well cut the dress up with an axe and feed it to a dog, then use it as a doona. There is no point owning a nice dress if you aren't going to make it awesome by wearing awesome shoes. You can even wear a crap dress, and wear awesome shoes, and win at life. Shoes make or break whether or not you are the best person there. Trust me. I have the best shoes, and subsequently am always the best person at a party. =D I am joking, but I'm not joking about shoes being the most important accessory besides a flattering dress/outfit and decent makeup.

It's basically a gospel truth.

What has Emily been pondering lately?

As it is already over a week into 2009, I'm quite behind on the reflection/looking forward/goal-making requirements of this time of year. I can use the excuse I was away for a week and enjoyed the chill out time of no computers, no stress and no need to think beyond the next second, so I will. Instead, having lived a little in the new year, I'm going to convince myself I have better knowledge of what I'd like to get cracking on in the exciting but awkward-to-say 2009.

Having a week away gave me a bit of perspective. I'm very good at being busy, exhausted and overexcited/overworked/overplanned/over everything. Being away from home, with some of the faves, sleeping in, being forced to finish things I started, cooking a little, being responsible in a quiet sort of way, reminded me that I need to slow down. Focus on the things I'm good at, and are important to me. Try a few new things. Remind myself regularly that I don't have to do everything, otherwise I burn out, I'm sad, I'm grumpy and I make everything complicated. No one likes a grumpy Emily!

While we were away we watched Phantom of the Opera, and it was AMAZING. So I've decided I need to become more cultured in the area of musicals! I'm going to write a big list of as many as I can think of, and watch them all by the end of the year. It will happen.

As the world has been somewhat obsessed with the whole weight issue thing lately, it's been something that's been on my mind. I love food, and I intend to love it and eat it continuously. However, I really want to run the four k City to Surf this year. In order to do that, a bit of toning up and slimming down is required, due to crap knees and lack of running ability/fitness in most areas. Please keep in mind I don't judge you or your weight/lack thereof etc., and I am in no way becoming anorexic. I would simply like to enjoy the fitness I see in people like my brother, but without the obsessiveness and the big muscles. Somehow I don't think I could pull off the muscly look.

I know I sound hopelessly cliched, and very much like the white person stereotype in the ALL TIME GREATEST BOOK Stuff White People Like, but I want to travel a lot this year. I had fabulous plans to go away in the middle of the year, but had a think on issues like money, time, practicality and not wanting to burn myself out as uni is unfortunately still cranking on, and have changed times to the end of the year, overlapping with 2010. (That year is way easier to say, in my opinion). So I'm going to focus on saving money, being organized, being practical and being adventurous in the places of the world that need to be explored. And I'm not even limiting that to overseas - there are so many places in WA I've never really appreciated before.

My family continually jokes about my pathetic ability to be tidy. I have no desire to be neat. But, this year, I intend to actually keep my room tidy. Half of my stress was the result of a messy workspace, and messy approach to things. I want to become a neater, more organized and thus more focussed person this year.

I adore dance, as I think a lot of people know. And I now have an absolute obsession to learn the Michael Jackson Thriller dance. It is going to happen.

I have plenty of other little goals, and a few other goals that I won't write here. It's nice to have some perspective though! Life is just so exciting, I love how great each new day is.

Oh man, I'm one big cliche.

And just as a side note, I'd like to comment on the use of 'Facebook' as a verb, i.e. 'I was just facebooking God' or 'You facebooked me just as I called you!' I never did it until recently, when my friends encouraged this terrible habit. What say you, friends? Should we use 'facebook' as a verb? Is it better than 'raging' as my dad likes to say?
